Chargers were filed Thursday against the driver and passenger of a pickup truck involved in a collision that resulted in the death of Amy Voorhees, a teacher at DeMasi Middle School, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office. Both suspects were in the country illegally.

Voorhees, 27 of Evesham, was killed Wednesday morning when her vehicle was struck at the intersection of Troth Road and Route 70 in Evesham. Voorhees died at the scene. She was on her way to work at DeMasi Middle School when the collision occurred at approximately 7 a.m. Voorhees taught seventh grade language arts at the school and was also a softball coach.

Charges were filed against the driver of a pickup truck who crashed into the side of Voorhees’ car. Jose Luis Galindo-Sanchez, 26, of Camden, was charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. His brother, Lucio Garcia Sanchez, 19, also of Camden, was a passenger in the truck and was charged as a material witness, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation revealed that immediately after the crash, the suspect advised his brother to leave the scene in an effort to thwart law enforcement from collecting information regarding the incident. Law enforcement authorities found Lucio walking away from the collision site approximately a quarter mile from the intersection.

The incident is still being investigated to determine whether there was criminal conduct associated with the operation of the pickup truck being driven by the suspect. The collision occurred at approximately 7 a.m. The brothers were on their way to work for a sprinkler company in Medford. Their pickup truck, which was eastbound on Route 70, broadsided a car heading north on Troth Road that was being driven by Voorhees.

The brothers are originally from Mexico and are in the country illegally, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed detainers on both men. They were scheduled to have an initial court appearance Thursday.

The incident is being investigated by the BCPO, the Evesham Police Department and the New Jersey State Police.

On Thursday, the Evesham K-8 school district brought in extra counselors from Burlington County to help students, teachers and staff at DeMasi cope with the loss, Public Information Office Charlene Webster said. Guidance counselors were also available at other district schools.
